“Trombonico” subtitled “Moods for trombone and concert band” is a concerto for trombone in 3 movements – I. Swashbuckling, Singing, Caribbean, Bebop II. Remembering Miller and Dorsey III. Mischievously, With Swagger It was commissioned by Inda Bonete and the International Trombone Association for the 2015 International conference in Valencia, Spain. It was premiered on July 9 at the conference performed by Scott Hartman, trombone soloist with the Symphonic Band “Lira Castellonera”, conducted by Beatriz Fernandez. When composer Gregory Fritze was discussing the new concerto with Scott Hartman, Hartman asks that some special sections be in tribute to some of the great jazz trombonists of the past. So in the piece there are some jazz elements. The 2nd movement has the indication “Remembering (Glen) Miller and (Tommy) Dorsey. This piece is dedicated to Wayne R. Nottle, who was Gregory Fritze’s high school band director and a fine trombonist. “Trombonico” was awarded semifinalist in the Band Composition Competition of the American Prize in 2017. Instrumentation is: Piccolo, 2 Flutes 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons, Eb Clarinet (Optional), 3 Clarinets, Bass Clarinet, 2 Alto Saxophones, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, 3 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 2 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Solo Trombone, Timpani, Cello (Optional). Double Bass (Optional), Percussion (4 players – snare drum, bass drum, triangle, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, wood block, tam tam, castinets,, claves, bongos (2), orchestra bells, vibraphone, xylophone)
