Variaciones Sinfonicas was composed for the Banda Simfónica de la Societat Musical Lira Carcaixentina to performed in Valencia International Certamen of Band competition in 2001. The band wanted to compete in the Honor Section of the competition. That year there were five sections to compete, the Honor Section was the highest level. The Musical Lira Carcaixentina never competed in the Honor section before and conducted Rafa Sanz wanted something special. This was the 120th year for annual Certamen competition and up until this time usually transcriptions of orchestra compositions were played. Of the five bands competing that year one other band played The Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky and another played the Concerto for Orchestra by Witold Lutoslawski. It was rare it have an original piece just for the Certamen. The Banda Simfónica de la Societat Musical Lira Carcaixentina won first prize with Variaciones Sinfonicas. The piece is in four movements with the Theme presented at the very beginning of the first movement. The second movement is in a scherzo form which also includes a jazz tenor saxophone solo of the recapitulation of the Scherzo theme.
