Canzona A’5

Medium: Chamber Music

Canzona ‘a5 was composed in 2020 expressly for the Spanish Brass Quintet. It is composed in the 16th Century Italian style of music played at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, Italy. It is in this period that brass instruments are first used extensively. Most of the 16th Century canzonas were written in four parts, where the tuba player plays the same as the trombone down an octave. Gregory Fritze has performed in brass quintets for many years playing the 16th Century canzonas this way. The few 16th Century canzonas that are in five parts use the title ” ‘a5″ depicting “in five parts”, as this Canzona does.
