Canzona No. 2

Medium: Chamber Music

Canzona No. 2 was composed in 2020 expressly for the Spanish Brass Quintet. It is composed in the 16th Century Italian style of music played at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice, Italy. It is in this period that brass instruments are first used extensively. Most of the 16th Century canzonas were written in four parts, where the tuba player plays the same as the trombone down an octave. Canzona No. 2 is in five parts, so it may be more enjoyable to play for the tuba player. In this canzona a time change is made briefly to a 3/4 waltz rhythm. This rhythm shift was sometimes made in the 16th Century Italian Style.
